If travelling in low season (outside school holidays and peak periods) then final payment is required 6 - 8 weeks prior to departure. Peak season final payment is required 12 - 14 weeks before.
If travelling within 2 – 4 weeks of travel, some hotels require full payment before they will confirm your accommodation.
While some operators get their contracts in South African Rand to secure the rates, a lot contract in Euros and Dollars.
What this means is that every time there is a change in rate of exchange, your booking will be affected.

We are a family of 4 and I have personally taken out all-inclusive as I wanted no surprises when checking out.
This all depends on what you want to do in Mauritius. If you plan on exploring the island then cash for taxis, tips, food, drinks and entry fees will be required.
If staying in the resort, all hotels except credit cards and you can pay when you check out of the hotel.
